Early and Late-Style Catalytic Converters: To determine which catalytic-converter your vehicle is equipped with, look at the joining flange between the Y-pipe and the catalytic converter. If the flange is behind the transmission crossmember, it is an early style. If the flange is in front of the crossmember, it is a late-style.
