Not as much Sting as expected - 07/28/2007
Review for: Banks Stinger System

I have a 1990 Ford F250 4x4 with a 460cu gas engine. Before I installed the stinger system I had trouble holding 50 mph while pulling my travel trailer over either Stevens or Snoqualmie passes here in Washington. I am also carrying more equipment in the back of the truck so I know its a heavy load. Also the tranny shifting was pretty soft and sluggish. I installed the Stinger system and the Transcommand from Banks per the instructions. I will say that the Stinger install was pretty simple and everything fit pretty well. The Transcommand install is no fun since I only had a couple inches of slack in the factory wiring to work with when re-wiring the system. But I did it all in an afternoon lying on the ground under my truck. For the test run I loaded up the truck and connected the trailer and headed over Snoqualmie pass. I was able to hold 55 mph at the slowest, steepest parts, which is a 5 mph improvement but not as much as I expected. The exhaust is much more throaty but that doesnt translate into significant power. The Transcommand is noticable when upshifting into 3rd with the throttle down. It probably will reduce the wear on the tranny and pay for its $250+ price tag by not needed to replace my tranny as soon as without it. But I dont know if I am getting $500+ value out of the Stinger. The truck seems to have some more power for flat cruising around 65 mph but still loses lots of steam when it comes to the big hills. Is the whole $800+ investment worth it? Probably not but there arent a lot of other choices on the market to boost the output of the poor old 460 with bolt on parts. Maybe my opinion will improve after a few more trips. I wish I could have dynoed the whole thing before and after but my perception is that it isnt anywhere near +40 hp but more like + 10 hp. |

still not sure - 07/15/2007
Review for: Powerpack System 2004 Ford 6.8L Mh-C, E-S/D

Not sure yet if it was worth the headache of installing and the expense. Installing headers on a 2004 E450 V10 is not the job for a weekend mechanic with hand wrenchs. Houdini would have trouble getting half the head bolts out, and just as much fun trying to get the new bolts tight on the headers. If you have access to a midget with long skinny arms it may not be too bad. Instructions are very vague, may or may not have anything to do with the year you are working on. Dont follow the instruction that tells you to tighten everything as you go, you wont have it lined up or be able to put it on the hangers. The tailpipe will not go over axle if vehicle is not jacked up. Since I didnt have jack strong enough to lift it, I dug the stones out of my driveway to lower pipe. Then it went over axle, but would not clear the right rear shock,so I had to remove the shock temorarily to get the tailpipe in place. I hate to say I put in about 42 hours on doing this install by myself. It definitely has more power on hills, but I was a lot more impressed with the difference the Banks Trans Command made for less than $300 and an hour to install. |

Review for: Banks Stinger System

INSTALLED THE SYSTEM ON A FORD F350 TRITON V10. HARDEST PART WAS REMOVING THE OLD SYSTEM-(HAD TO CUT THE TAILPIPE FROM THE MUFFLER TO GET IT OUT). TOOK ABOUT 2HRS TO INSTALL EVERYTHING. I'VE INSTALLED SYSTEMS FROM FLOWMASTER AND DYNAMAX IN THE PAST THIS WAS BY FAR A BETTER FIT. SYSTEM HAS GREAT SOUND AND POWER. |
