The SysteMAX II camshaft makes the 5.0L H.O. EFI engine run like a 460! This camshaft is designed to make maximum use and take full advantage of the new manifolds and head designs. The intake and exhaust valve lobes are ground with a special inverse radius that accelerates the valve opening at that point to achieve maximum cylinder fill. A key component of this extraordinary working team, the SysteMAX II camshaft will allow any 5.0L H.O. EFI engine to make torque and horsepower like you never thought possible.
Push Rods
A new set of hardened push rods is included with the SysteMAX II package. Their length is slightly longer than stock to accommodate optional roller rocker arms and the newly designed cylinder head.
Intake Manifold
A new lower intake manifold was designed for the SysteMAX II package to maximize the flow of air to the new SysteMAX II heads. The lower intake was designed to precisely match the new cylinder head intake ports and also the large rectangular ports of the new high-flow manifold's top section. Precise port matching is absolutely necessary to avoid undue turbulence and restriction to the flow of air. Stock injector locations were retained as well as the water outlets and some of the emission connections, so as to minimize installation hassles. EGR routing was revised in order to achieve increased air flow. The stock Ford design provides for EGR passage routing within the intake manifold. Routing EGR outside the manifold enabled Holley engineers to substantially increase the size of the intake passages over the original factory design. The upper intake manifold design also came in for some attention. It was performance-configured to maximize the operating efficiency of the complete air intake system. Its objective involves the quick and efficient movement of the maximum amount of air, with a minimal amount of restriction, to the intake valves.
Cylinder Heads
Holley aluminum (356-T6) cylinder heads are light in weight and offer heavy-duty performance. The intake and exhaust runners are configured to optimize breathing and the large, three-angle valves provide excellent intake and exhaust flow. The combustion chambers are performance designs engineered to deliver optimum power from every combustion stroke. Heavy-duty valve springs and rocker arms insure high RPM reliability and performance.
Timing Chain and Gears
The double roller timing chain and gears provide for more consistently precise timing and, therefore, more power.
SysteMAX Recommendations
A set of 1-5/8in tube headers, used in conjunction with high-flow/ low-back-pressure mufflers is definitely recommended. A 3.73 axle ratio, for either automatic or manual transmission vehicles, will allow you to take better advantage of the engine's higher RPM torque and horsepower.
NOTE ON TRANSMISSIONS: Due to the increased torque and horsepower produced by SysteMAX II a heavy duty manual transmission (Ford SVO) must be used. Also, the automatic transmission deserves some attention. One of the Holley engineering test Mustangs used a stock Ford AOD transmission that was modified with a B & M 2500 RPM stall speed torque converter and shift kit. The combination provided very good performance results.
New, top quality gaskets for your specific application are required separately and are not part of the package. Good quality roller rocker arms should also be used with SysteMAX II.
Power peaks at just under 6,000 RPM with the SysteMAX II package. Holley engineers found that maximum performance can be realized by shifting at 5,800 to 6,000 RPM.
