K&N FIPK II Air Intake Kit
I installed the K&N FIPK2 air intake kit in about an hour or so, but I went slow and didnt rush anything. The instructions covered everything I needed to know for installation. Now that Ive driven almost 1500 miles with it, I can say it is definitely worth it. I have a 3 cat back exhaust with shorty headers, and this combination has netted me anywhere from 17-19 mpg at 65-70 mph on my 1998 light duty F-250 with the 5.4L and an automatic transmission. Before I could only get 14-15.5 mpg. This kit does increase intake noise levels quite a bit over stock, but it sounds deep and throaty so I dont mind. It seems to increase power, but I dont have any dyno sheets to back it up so I really dont know. Hope this review helps you out in your decision.
it arrived and i have it installed. it took about an hour. have not had much chance yet. will give it a test next summer hauling our fifth wheel
I dont know how much Hp or mpg I got out of this but it made the exhaust and engine have a deeper tone might of got a little better throttle response want to get a BBK Throttle Body see if that helps it out a little better (98 F-150 5.4 122000mi)
Excellent intake system, although the instructions could be slightly more clear (in COLOR, perhaps? B&W makes things even harder to tell apart) with better pictures relevant to EACH engine application. We did the install on the 4.6L, but the directions are universal, and have alot of pics from the 5.4L model. Not too much difference, but enough to make you scratch your head for a second every now and then if you aren't familiar with both engines. Get a friend and have in knocked out in about an hour.
Overall, I was very impressed after the install was done. With this system, you'll run on average about 100 rpm lower in all gears, which is more noticeable on the highway. My friend got 320 miles out of a full tank in a '98 F150 4.6L, with 200K miles on the clock! Pretty good for an engine with that kind of mileage on it. Former work truck too, well taken care of for the most part though. He barely made 290 miles on a full tank before we installed the kit. That says alot right there, about a 30% mileage increase. He got a pretty decent torque boost, too...he roasted his tires pretty good pulling out of my driveway after we were done, something he couldn't do before. That may have been due to the high mileage though...I think this system really put some life back into his motor. Newer trucks or trucks with lower miles might not see that much of a torque gain, but the mileage increase is very worth it with gas prices like they are right now. Sounds slick at high RPMs, too - trademark Ford V8 engine sound...lets people know that you arent exactly stock, without the aggressive note of an aftermarket exhaust. Great product! Highly recommended. Get the model with the heat shield though, I ordered from NOPI.com before I found this website, and the picture there shows the shield but they don't include it. Oh well, thats what you get for only $211. Pay the extra few bucks and get the product you want!
when i first bought this kit it was the only one out there. after a while i noticed that plastic intake tube was hot so i used aluminum foambacked tape to prevent this heat soak and the engine ran better due to the increase of cold air into the engine. the only problem is that the support bracket that ties the plastic intake tube to the 4.6l engine block between the left coil pack and the alternator is that this bracket doesnot hold the filter high enough off of the fenderwell and the filterbounces off the fender and has a few holes in it after 1 year of running.if i had to choose again i would look at something different, possibly with an airbox to get more cold air from outside the engine compartment. i donot know if k&n will sell the airshroud seperately to fit this model as there is a model now with the airbox on the kit.
I really didn't feel too much power gain or any mileage gains but it sounds good especially with a throttle body spacer.
I BOUGHT THE KIT IS WAS EASY TO INSTALL. IT SAVES MONEY ON AIR FILTERS AND MAKE THE FLOWS ON MY TRUCK SOUND GOOD. ALSO I HAVE A TB SPACER IN THE MIX. NOT MUCH OF A CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD MAKE. WOULD TRY A DIFFERENT BRAND NEXT TIME.
I noticed a slight increase in power but only in the higher rpm range. This website says 14-16 hp but the dyno that comes with the intake says 9.44 hp. And the increase in torque is very minimal if any at all cause the power increase is in the high rpms. You can actually hear the intake sucking in the air. The intake also looks good under the hood. As far as gas mileage, I track every tank and my gas mileage did not improve at all under the same driving conditions. Now i never have to change my air filter and this intake is legal because it comes with the CARB sticker. Overall, not much change
but still a good purchase.
I JUST INSTALLED THE GEN II FILTER KIT IN MY 2002 F150 WITH 4.6 ENGINE, THROTTLE BODY SPACER, AND FLOWMASTER MUFFLER. THE INSTALL TOOK MORE LIKE AN HOUR BUT I TOOK MY TIME AND WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WITH SOME OF THE DIRECTIONS. THE HARDEST PART WAS GETTING ALL THE STOCK PIECES OFF. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T BREAK ANY CONNECTIONS. ALSO, THE FINISH COULD BE A LITTLE BETTER ON THE HOUSING WHERE HOSES AND FITTINGS ARE BUT I'M NIT-PICKING. THE END RESULT SOUNDED GREAT. IT DOESN'T FEEL ANY FASTER BUT HAS A NICE GROWL AT FULL THROTTLE, ENHANCES THE EXHAUST SOUND! BY THE WAY, THE DYNO SHEET THAT CAME WITH THE PRODUCT SHOWS ONLY AN AVERAGE INCREASE OF 9.44 HORSEPOWER!?!
I just installed this product on my 1999 F-150 and it sounds good with my flow masters. It takes a little longer than i thought to put in but it is well worth it. You can really tell an improvement in throttle response. I havent had it long enough to test the horsepower gains or torque. But sure can feel it.
