Pros and Cons of Electric Cooling Fan for Super Duty
I have installed this fan and lived with it for a couple months now, so I am ready to voice my opinion.
I have a 2001 F250 Powerstroke Diesel 4x4 which I bought new in 2000. Right now the truck is showroom conditions, and just hit 36,000 miles on it (yes, 36,000). I love this truck and have put a few goodies on it. I have always wished the Lions Roar of the factory clutch fan was a little less obtrusive, so when I saw the electric fan kit, I just had to have it. Well, it is very quiet compared to the belt driven clutch fan, that is, until it turns ON! I have 3 vehicles with electric fans and unless you are standing over the open hood when their fans kick on, you can not even tell they are running. This Flex-A-Lite unit chatters and vibrates so much at start up, you would think it is going to self destruct before it gets up to speed! It is horribly balanced, and I do not see how the little bearings will survive for very long (if they even ARE bearings and not bushings). You can FEEL the fans running vibrations while sitting in the truck. Even worse, since the fans start with 60% power (new and improved feature) literally every 30 seconds due to the hairbrained design of putting the temperature sensor probe directly in front of one of the fans, so it cools and heats rapidly, thus cycling constantly! I installed the full speed switch, not knowing how the set up was going to work, and with the fans running 100% they literally SCREAM! Also probably due to bad balancing and the flimsly aluminum motor brackets. The fit of the shroud required some additional tweaking to get it to sit flat over the radiator, and the brackets supplied look really jury rigged. The conversion DOES provide better fuel mileage, much to my surprise, and it seems a bit quicker off the line now as well. I am going to send my results to Flex-A-Lite and see if they have a solution as a stand up company or I just wasted a bunch of money swapping one annoyance for another. I suggest not buying this thing until they improve on it, AND make the customers who invested in it happy! |
